Her research focuses on the modalities of political change and the geographies of poverty and inequality, specifically in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina with a particular interest in political subjectivities, spaces of alternative organizing, alliance, urban citizenship, houselessness, and intersectionality. Her work has looked at the ways political change happens particularly pertaining to sociopolitical movements such as on-the-ground and non-institutionalized collectives. She participates in several national and international projects and collaborations with colleagues from the Global South and North and has published in both Spanish and English in Gender, Place & Culture, Revista de Estudios Sociales-UNL, Geoforum, and Revista Colombiana de Sociología, among other journals. Besides her undergraduate teaching at UBA, Dr. Farías has taught graduate seminars as guest lecturer in Universidad Nacional de La Plata and Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Dr. Farías’s militant activism in a sociopolitical grassroots organization builds connections between academic and grassroots political work.
As a USF International Fellow, Dr Mónica Farías will spend three months working with Dr. Ryan Burns in the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary.
