Urban imaginaries, sensory politics, and the moral life of cities: honouring the legacy of C.P. Pow (1974–2021)

Urban Studies Foundation session at the 2025 International Conference on China Urban Development

At this year’s International Conference on China Urban Development in London, the Urban Studies Foundation will host a segment in memory of C.P. Pow – colleague, collaborator, and former trustee – whose intellectual generosity and methodological attentiveness continue to shape the ways we study, inhabit, and imagine cities.

The segment will mark the launch of a curated collection of Pow’s writings, produced and funded by the Urban Studies Foundation: C.P. Pow: selected essays (2025).  Framed as a collective conversation, it will bring together those whose own scholarship has been shaped by Pow’s work on sensory politics, moral geographies, ecological urbanism, and the circulation of planning expertise – and those who wish to carry his legacy forward in critical, situated, and generous ways.

The segment will take place on July 8th, starting at 12:20 pm in Room Leolin Price LT (after Session 4A, “Everyday Life”).

This segment is organised by Prof Deljana Iossifova, and enquiries may be sent to: grants@urbanstudiesfoundation.org

"With an International Fellowship I was able to receive the mentorship, time and resources that I needed to help me sit in my ideas. As a result, I am now more confident that the ideas I endeavour to put forward, informed, predominantly, by African and Southern experiences and theories, have value beyond my immediate geographies."

Dr Wangui Kimari, International Fellowship
