Nostalgia film scene

Synopsis

There was once an unusual town in Hunan, China. In the 1980s, when many rural areas across the country had scarcely encountered a private automobile, this town already maintained its own fleet of vehicles. It was considered “fashionable”: its cinema screened new releases almost as soon as they appeared, and despite its remote, mountainous setting, young people dressed with striking modernity.

The town was called Meitian. In the early 1990s, however, most of its inhabitants seemed to vanish almost overnight, leaving behind little explanation of where they had gone. Nostalgia traces the story of this southern Chinese town and explores the complexities of urban development, migration, and collective memory in contemporary China.

Through intimate interviews and archival footage, the film captures the nostalgic longing of former residents and reflects on what prosperity means in the context of rapid industrialisation.

Our USF grant provided the platform for a major programme of research on family homelessness, debt and temporary accommodation in the UK, culminating in the 2025 co-authored book Debt Trap Nation: Family Homelessness in a Failing State. The grant generated more than £550,000 in subsequent research funding and grew new and now enduring partnerships with Shared Health Foundation, the Chartered Institute of Housing, Garden Court Chambers and the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Households in Temporary Accommodation. The research has had significant policy impact. It directly informed the UK Government's National Plan to End Homelessness (2025) and underpinned a proposed amendment to the Social Housing Bill currently before the House of Lords (June 2026), with the potential to change primary legislation affecting survivors of domestic abuse facing housing-related debt.
