Dr. Augusto dos Santos Pereira is a Brazilian Geographer who works at the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (Brazilian census bureau), where he runs teams of up to 600 people charged with the application of surveys related to many different subjects – population, job stock, inflation, economic output Etc.
He also works as a consultant in Urban Geography, having participated in several projects of urban and regional planning. Among his latest projects, there can be found metropolitan integrated plans and studies of urban networks funded by the United Nations and by the Inter-American Development Bank. In opportunities like these he applies modern Data Science tools throughout the entire analytical workflow.
As a USF International Fellow, Dr. Pereira will spend four months at the London School of Economics to work with Professor Michael Storper, doing research on the conditions for the production of knowledge and Innovation in Brazilian metropolitan areas under the current economic and technological paradigm. The comparative analysis will be built onto a neo-Schumpeterian theoretical framework with the help of several indicators, such as S&T personnel, knowledge-based services, technology-based industries, GPD per capita, income per capita Etc.
