The spatial politics of labour solidarity in late twentieth-century Britain
Funding period: 1 October 2017 – 30 September 2020
Type of funding:
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
My research has focused on historical geographies of labour and social movements, particularly in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s. Theoretically I have been particularly interested in developing ideas around solidarity. My current focus is building on my doctoral research on relationships between London and the coalfields from the late 1960s onwards. I have recently completed a booklet of first hand accounts of support for the miners during the 1984-5 strike with Dr David Featherstone (available here). Future research plans include a historical geography of the picket line, and exploring conceptions and practices of democracy – particularly in the labour movement – in the second half of the 20th century.
