Dr Suraya Scheba is a lecturer and researcher in the environmental and geographical sciences department at the University of Cape Town, in South Africa.
Her current research focuses on the practice of land and building occupation, in the context of a ubiquitous urban precarity that necessitates tactics of survival and refusal. The research, carried out with a small team of collaborators and co-thinkers, comparatively explores the practices and possibilities of urban occupations, located in 3 cities of the Global South: Bogota, Cape Town & Sao Paulo.
As a USF International Fellow, Dr Scheba will spend three months working with Professor Maria Kaika at the Centre for Urban Studies (CUS), at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
